Florianópolis Innovation Observatory: The Acceleration of the Technology Sector in Brazil’s Startup Capital
In September 2024, Florianópolis was officially recognized by federal legislation (Law No. 14,955) as the National Startup Capital. Data from the Florianópolis Innovation Observatory show the relevance of this ecosystem to the local economy: the city has 12 technology companies for every thousand residents, the highest proportional concentration among Brazilian state capitals.
The study also revealed that the capital’s technology ecosystem accelerated its growth in the early part of this decade, reaching record revenue of R$12.8 billion in 2023. The sector now formally accounts for a quarter of the city’s GDP.
Direct Impact on Public Coffers and New Investments
One of the most striking figures is the direct financial return for the city. In 2024, tax revenue from technology activities jumped 27%, totaling R$146 million.
Over the past two years, local companies have attracted more than R$1.3 billion in investments. In 2025 alone, R$787 million was invested, proving that Florianópolis has moved beyond being just a regional hub to becoming a benchmark for capital attraction, including funds from global investors and companies.
A Solidly Based Ecosystem
Florianópolis is now home to 23.1% of all technology companies in Santa Catarina. The profile is one of a democratic and expanding ecosystem:
- 84% of companies are micro and small businesses (with annual revenue up to R$360,000), functioning as a breeding ground for new ideas.
- More than 500 companies have already reached a level of maturity with annual revenue exceeding R$1.5 million.
